Yes, He Khan Do it!
Aug 27, 2018
After his first start for the stable at Moonee Valley some months ago, there were plenty of "knockers" on the Gangemi Racing's decision to purchase the very flashy looking "Khan". The beautiful chestnut gelding with the big white blaze performed poorly on that night and the view was that he has some mental issues preventing him from putting his best foot forward.
Fast forward a few months of paddock time and tender loving care and the gelding (who was once favourite for the Golden Slipper!!) has become a much happier horse. And that all played out last Saturday at Belmont, when Khan fought back from being headed to win first up for the stable in WA.
Well ridden by stable jockey Peter Knuckey, Khan jumped from the inside barrier and settled behind the pace. Turning for home and "Knucks" had to extricate him around heels and he joined in with purpose. After heading the favourite down the straight, Khan then had to withstand the swoopers. In fact, the runner-up actually headed him and the previous "Khan" knockers would have thought he would have given it away, however, the Exceed and Excel gelding dug deep and bobbed again on the line to get up for his huge band of GR supporters in the winning enclosure.
It was an outstanding performance considering Khan was first-up and carrying topweight of 59kg. His time of 58.71secs for the 1000m was also excellent. Hopefully we can continue to see the new "happy" Khan salute again in the coming weeks.
